I have the 10mm Fishie and managed to find myself a NEW UNUSED 14mm even though it's been discontinued for almost 10 years. Cost me a grand but god I love it
It's a nice lens but will bite you in the ass if you don't treat it exactly right, will cover your shots in fringing and purple vomit if you don't set your aperture and focus right. Otherwise it has a godly image especially for portraits, has a kind of golden quality that emphasizes the golden hour or warm light.
Wide open you have to focus close at the long end to avoid fringing and the wide end with landscape has to be closed down at least f/8. Great for landscapes, portraits and some nature stuff but for events I'd rather go with the 16-45/4 or the 16-85
The SDM can give you some headache if you don't move it a bit (few AF cycles) every 1-2 weeks, if you leave it for a long time it can seize up and burn out the AF drive. Much better to convert it to screwdrive only.
the K-50 came in 120 color c-c-c-c-combos. i bought a white and black one, which is now annoying because i have since upgraded to the silver KP but my workhorse kit lens is white... looks kinda dumß

Nice. Agree, at 1+ seconds even mundane scenes may become magical. Currently I'm limited to doing long exp in the night or evening as I don't have any ND filter. Not sure which one I should buy, ND8, ND16, ND1000, etc...
I have a couple variable NDs (one cheep 52mm thread and one expensive 77mm one). The cheep one is clean for maybe 3 stops, the expensive one is good for at least 6 or so.
I just don't have the money for things I don't really need, most of my togging is at night and so I don't really need it
Yup. I have a friend who's literally ALWAYS game for shenanigans at night with the camera. We have beers, stumble around the wilderness or train tracks and abandoned factories and I do shots of all of it. Truly blessed to have so much fun but also so many photos tied to it.
It's just slow shutter speed. Dim evening light allowed 1½ sec shutter speed at f/16 without overexposure. I used a tripod and camera 2-second self-timer to take the picture (I don't have cable release atm)
Check the ISO range and noise quality. Pentax cameras have a wide range of low light performance, with some of the k-series being vastly better with noise quality in high ISO modes. Other than that in my experience the UI and autofocus modes etc knick knacks are the big difference.
How come barely anyone use the old k mount lenses on modern pentax dslrs?
I mean as compared to Nikon dslr shooters who still bumps the price of the old nikkors due to still using them?
Even now see Z shooters mounting old ai nikkors on them
Often expensive for the good stuff and not quite as good
In my case i can tell you when i had to pick a system i saw the 50mm 1.2 Ricoh was around 500 dollars while the Nikon cheapest alternative, the 55mm 1.2, was 150 or 200 for a really good version, the 50mm is still cheaper too at around 300.
The 180mm 2.8 is another example, for Nikon it's easy to find and cheap enough either in D or AI, the Bentacks version costs double and it's not common to see along with not being as sharp. List goes on, it's a shame because the K1 beats every Nikon DSLR other than the D850 and that's only because of the megapickles count and backlit buttons, in terms of features it busts it too.
You can find the old designs in new lenses, often with better production and better coatings and with AF. The DA 50/1.8 is the same as the old FA 50/1.7 or the A or M 50/1.7. The DA 35/2.4 is the FA 35/2 with a baffle because it was soft until f/2.4 on digital sensor stacks, also an old design. The DA 40/2.8 Limited is the same optical design as the M 40/2.8 but sharper and has better coating and AF and is very accessible on the used market.
There is only one, the FA 50/1.4 that is still a bargain and a superb lens, especially for the K-1 where the modern alternative would be the DA* 55/1.4 (expensive) or the D-FA* 50/1.4 (super expensive)
The FA* 85/1.4 is inaccessible for having collectible status and hipster tax, also not much were made, somehow is harder to come by than the D-FA* 85/1.4
The old k-mount lens (manual and AF) work great with the K1, I purchased a few and had a few from my Pentax film days. I do own the newer digital lenses and use them often, but still love the FA*/FA series for the "film" look and it's deep natural color saturation that many of them offer.
Just got a bigass sigma 50-500mm lens for my K-1. Heavy as FUCK. It's the version without optical stabilization, but I figure that's what the IBIS is for. I like it so far, but it's not very discreet for street photography. Great for birds, girls, and helicopters.
We regard image quality differently to the "Snoy method". Instead of using charts and graphs we use the lenses as intended, taking photos in the real world. Softness wide open does not matter when your landscape is shot at f/16, your street at f/8 and when shooting portraits and wide open you don't want deep pores and you only want the center to be sharp.
In real world uses a lens being tack sharp has no meaning when the colors are bland.
Why would you want to pixel peep some charts when you are going to print your real world shots?
You do print your photos, right, anon?
I agree with what you said, i was making a comparison between two wildly different opinions from two anons, but to be completely fair with you the only bentacks lens i tried was inferior in every way to the Nikkor equivalent.
That one was the Takumar 85mm against the Nikkor 85mm f/2, mind you they were adapted but the latter was sharper and had stronger colours. Also priced much less.
Oh, yes, Takumars are collectible items now, just like most M or A (A*) lenses.
Even with relatively newer lenses there are collectible tax to pay, for example my FA 43 Limited I wanted a black, Made In Japan version and had to pay almost double of non MIJ FA 43 silvers. Good thing I found one in mint condition without the box for reasonable price, but still japanese seller.
The lens is superb BTW.
I've heard good things of the Limited series, the 77mm f/1.8 i often read tons of praise but after all the famous Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 D costs around the same and is on par aside from the weight.
For a massive poorfag like me that Nikon used market advantage is hard to argue against, especially when Pentax has only two cameras in full frame, first one which is still relatively new. It is the best FF DSLR out there but i have to spend tons to have an optical performance that with a Nikon i can find for half or less, pixel shift aside.
If i had money to blow around, in fact not that much, if i had money to buy a car i would rather get a good Pentax glass system but alas i don't think i've researched enough to find one truly great lens in every focal range that won't make me buy a Nikkor and change its mount ring to K mount.
What I love about the 43 is it's tiny small size, even on a FF DSLR it takes the size of a small MILC with collapsed lens, the focal length is just spot on and the colors it produces is just superb, also sharp and no adverse aberrations.
Compared to my DA 35/2.4 where it has a bland image although sharp and I just can't find a good composition on it, not on the K-1 or the K-3.
The FA-43 just works.
What you should be looking for is the 1.7x AF TC and you can adapt old Nikkor (and other) tele lenses and have working AF.

Taking into consideration Pentax' userbase i often wonder why nobody did a high quality F to K adapter with a good piece of glass for infinity, there's some adapters but that corrective piece is often dogshit and distorts the corners of almost every lens.

That would be the EF to K adapter. F mount is longer flange distance so it just needs a mechanical bayonet adapter.

F is a longer flange than K, but only by about a millimeter or so. You can't make an adapter thin enough to be glassless, is the problem.

I don't mind the glass design, i mind that it uses cheap shitty glass.
Guess there's not enough market for it.
>and when shooting portraits and wide open you don't want deep pores and you only want the center to be sharp.
This was the one shit thing you said. I want freedom to frame portraits any where, not always center. When I was looking at 70-200 f/2.8 zooms I went with the Tamron G2 over the Canon L in large part because at any focal length the G2 is as sharp at the edges as it is center. Which means mid frame is always available for portraits.
I looked up what the smallest Pentax DSLR is and read k2000...
Would this be good enough for street photography with a pancake lens? As much as mirrorless is nice and all, I want that juicy DSLR battery. Also as OP stated, Pentax is a little bit, dare I say, based.

If you have the money consider the 16-50mm f 2.8 lens as an everyday walkaround (costs as much or more than the camera). I'll try to find some low light pics and post some time so you can see. except the 16-50/2.8 as walkaround. It is not a walkaround or event lens, it is mainly for portraits and landscape faffing. For everyday walkaround the 16-45/4 is better or the 20-40 Limited zoom. Out of these three the 16-45 is the sharpest (later model is the 16-85 WR, highly recommended)

this camera was my best friend for 4 years. it had the aperture failure but I took it apart and fixed it and it never failed again for 2 years until I bought my KP. no other malfunctions or signs of damage/wear, except the odd dead pickle visible in long night exposures, but it has a dead pickle self-detection feature so it's not a problem.
The aperture block problem is an out-of-spec-part problem, you don't just "fix" it. You took it apart, fucked with it and want to dump it on a beginner to deal with your shit. Fuck off!

wtf are you talking about? there are plenty of tutorials on how to fix it online and it's easy. there's a little magnet solenoid which gets tarnished and doesn't conduct properly, you take it out and polish it on very fine sandpaper (nail polish block in my case) and it works a treat. it's never failed once since.
>Internet, just like your toilet paper.
Wot >You can afford toilet paper, can you, anon?
Yes, but I don't have the internet.
Also >Buying consoomer electronics without even looking at them
Want to know how I know you're one of those homosexuals that spends 3x the amount of time looking at youtubers product reviews than you do taking photos?
I got my KayPee and quite a few lenses through Ted's. Often they are "special order" but I still got them in a week or two, even mid-covid I got my 100mm prime in like 2 weeks when they thought it might take 12.
That's a big question. The short answer is I love it. Having always been a poorƒag who was very happy with a P&S for a decade, and then moving mountains to get my K-50 back in 2014, the KP upgrade in 2020 was just pure joy.
I almost got a K-70 too, I do like the more articulate screen of the K-70 which is nice for low tripod shots etc; but the KP was newer and better spec but never found a huge market so the price was very competitive.
The more pro features (more customizable buttons and extra programmable pair of wheels) have made it so much more fun to shoot because the workflow is so much tidier than my K-50/70, and for me who shoots 90% at night having a button to flip the screen into night mode and then adjust brightness is awesome too.
I LOVE the fact I almost never have to go into menus to change settings day or night because the 4th and 5th wheels do it all for me, or the buttons do it. And of course when you do go into menus for special situations it has more features than its peers. I honestly think I can use this camera happily for 10 more years if it holds together.
As a bonus, the right hand grip is interchangeable with 3 sizes available (depending what country you are it usually comes with all 3) and that was neat too.

Ricoh is the best place for Pentax to have ended up in. I don't see what the problem is. Both niche Japanese camera manufacturers. Pentax still pumping out brand new DSLRs, binoculars, telescope eyepieces... Imagine the brand being owned by some Chinese consortium that makes its money by licensing (whoring) out the brand name for a few quick bucks. Now that would have been a fucking joke.
I'll keep an eye out for eggsamples anon but we've all seen threads or posts about a new FF or MF or whatever instigating with "this kills the APS-C" and then half the posters attack the product, even if it is actually awesome
>we've all seen threads or posts about a new FF or MF with "this kills the APS-C" and then half the posters attack the product, even if it is actually awesome
No, i haven't seen those threads while also seeing the lingering "well-engineered new shit", most cameras nowadays have a fatal flaw after being released that can only be fixed with patches and other inane shit, the last camera i remember being released in a great state was the Z9 and the A7SIII (and not so much because there were a couple of bugs in the video mode), plus i don't remember many attacking those cameras, they are top-notch and even butthurt non-FF shooters accept their strong points with very little if no shortcomings.
My first SLR was a Ricoh KR-5 Super II, which used pentax K mount lenses. It was a great camera and came with a couple of cool lenses, including a 35-70mm which is still my go to all-purpose lens. I then got a K1000 which was kinda meh. I have a LX now which is a wonderful camera. Pricey though.
I find it to be extremely versatile with the ability to frame photos how I want.
35 and 70 aren't very different perspectives from 50 though. If you were carrying primes, would you pick those three? Not a chance, you'd want something like 24 (or wider), 50, and a 105 or maybe 135.
>35 and 70 aren't very different perspectives from 50 though
They are, the former is 65 degrees and the latter is 35, that's a lot actually and not every shot can be resolved with "just walk some more bro", compression and depth of field also play a part.
Ya pretty much. I use it like most would use a 50. It's great for taking photos in busy areas where it would be a pain or not possible to get where you would need to be in order to get a good shot with a dedicated 50mm lens. I have a 50mm with a nice big aperture but end up using this 35-70mm like 90% of the time.
For starting out I'd rather go with the kit lens, 18-50 WR. Later I'd get the DA 21 Limited and the DA 40 Limited.
The 50/1.8 is a very good and cheap lens but on APS-C it will give you problems. It is more of a portrait lens and you would need FF to start getting good compositions with it and even then I find it constricting and went with the wider 43mm
Wrong, in fact you can shoot any genre with any lens unlike what dumb retarded nophoto homosexuals tell you here, the thing is some focal lengths are harder to use than other depending on the scene.
Wide angle lenses are tricky to use, not as much as fish eyes but still tough in landscape because you need to compose with two planes at minimum unlike a telephoto which lets you focus on something very specific or compress it to make it a single one.
It is not easier to compose with a wide angle compared to a telephoto but it is way easier to portray the entire thing with it. We would need to see what kind of landscape the inquirer pretends to shoot.

I can't comment about the speed because I don't have one but it's a bit of a tank. 1kg according to dpreview.com (batteries but no lens). Not out of the ordinary for the type of camera it is but in the grand scheme of things quite heavy. If you're used to a 5D3 or something like that you won't notice a difference. If lanky ass Lok Cheung can walk around with one all day you'll be right
I want to take photos at night, the thing with the Z5 is the lenses aren't weather sealed. Pentax bodies and lenses being durable is a big selling point, because when some weather shit happens I want to be able to take photos of it >b-but you shouldn't be outside when its raining/snowing/abo attack
That's how you get interesting photos

You're outing yourself to be inexperienced. An eye set to night is better than live view/theevf and the ovf, though the ovf at least doesn't bug you with adjusting the eye to more brightness, which a screen does. You have to take long exposure pictures to see night black. If you don't have the focus or the perspective set at dusk, you do it with a flashlight or laser pointer. For infinity focus, you need a marker on the lens or a bright night, if not fixed focus that may come from a tape on the lens. A live view feed that gives a silhouette of foreground requires a feed frame rate of way less than 1, which most cameras don't implement. The major argument that you can make in favor of an evf is the loupe to align for and focus on stars - and you'd rather use the display here.
In occasions it's cold, wet and windy. A stable stand, absence of image stabilization and in camera noise reduction respective lag, endurance during shooting in terms of soaking, cooling or heating, energy draining, the ability of external power supply are all much more important.
Fair. Then I have no idea, and don't think Pentax is that bad. Anyway, only an attached flash unit makes auto focusing at night a real breeze, just because of the AF assist beam, whether the flash fires or not.

Complete newfag here, never owned a camera ever but I wanna shoot things just for the fun of it. Found a pentax q7 on ebay for like 170€. Should I go for it? I've read somewhere that you can use these old vintage lenses with an adapter, sounds pretty cool tbh.
The K-mount has a wider range of lenses, second hand and old cheap.
Q-mount is too recent. Search for Q-mount lenses before buying the camera an see for yourself.
None in particular, but one with a number in the name.
A 16Mpx minimum with a base lens (18-55) is around 150€ if you search on craigslist or else.
From then buy better lenses. A manual 28 2.8 is under 50€ > I have some shit and some bought for my friend

Nah forget it I'll just get the Q7. It includes the 02 standard zoom which is fine enough. Seems like a steal for 170€. I like how tiny and candid it is, exactly what I need if I wanna shoot homeless crackheads at the main station without stirring attention.
Haven't used any Nikon cameras, but I'd say those you mentioned are totally different class of equipment. The FG has many electronic functions and several exposure modes. The SV is a very bare bones model without any bells & whistles. It doesn't even have a built-in light meter. I think its only "feature" is self-timer around the film rewind crank. It's a lovely camera though, my father had one and I still have it.
If you end up getting an SV, be prepared to do some maintenance/CLA to it. Quote from Pentax forums user review:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/camerareviews/pentax-sv-h3v.html >As a 'daily use' camera, the SV is a brilliant choice and there should be no reliability concerns. Provided the camera is used. An old eBay purchase, which hasn't been used for thirty years, is not working for that reason NOT because the camera is inherently unreliable. Store your serviced camera in a sealed box with a big silica gel bag and 'exercise it once a month, and it will last a lifetime.

Based.
I’m the guy who shot his friend’s wedding where I “passed round the Pentax”.
Been checking the Japanese yahoo auctions for the special edition KP. They seem a good price.
The 55-300 is one of the best kit telezooms around optically, super sharp and nice blur rendition. Too bad the AF is slow in the old screwdrive versions but the PLM version is fast
neat
I'm just getting into photography, I bought the K-x because back when it was still in production I did a bunch of research and decided on that as my first camera, but was poor then and never got around to it
The K-r kit was a good deal I just happened to see at the same time on ebay
based. I'm honestly still stunned that Pentax actually made a full frame DSLR. People had been wanting that shit since forever and it seemed like one of those "never gonna happen" things.
It's not a big surprise. Since Hoya acquired Pentax it was about bleeding the company to death and finally ripped some of the more specialized optical parts of the company when Ricoh stepped in, this was around the K-5IIs while the K-3 came out with Ricoh badge. Not just the FF DSLR, even lens development was halted under Hoya.
When Ricoh took over they immediately started funding lens development, starting with refreshing older lenses with new HD coating and WR, some completely new development, like the DA 55-300 WR or the DA 16-85 WR, also refreshing the Limited series, rounded aperture blades and HD coating.
They also started the FF development and came out with the K-1 after the K-3 II. They did such a good job it still bangs.
Remember, Hoya is the devil, enemy of photography. Don't buy anything from Hoya.
I've got it (it came in a kit with my k3ii) and it's great. I've got a 50mm prime (I think it's an F) but short of having shitloads to splash on all the limited primes I don't see the point in switching from it as my main lens.
Now telephoto otoh is a different story. I do landscape so don't really want to lug round one of the f2.8 70-200s, but I kind of resent the fact that the 70-210 f4 is basically a rebadged tamron at double the cost of what it would be on another mount. I've got the 100mm macro (another great lens) so I'm thinking of just getting either a 135 or a 200 prime instead. That said I did manage to get an older 80-200 for 30 bong pounds which is doing OK while I figure out if I really need the whole zoom range out can get away with a prime.
I'm glad they got out of the Hoya hell and got under Ricoh.
Ricoh is the company that went out of their ways to gather all photographs after the Fukushima earthquake/tsunami, all wet and destroyed and spared no expense to recover as much as they could. There were a bunch of shops opened with only these photographs ready to browse through and if you recognized one you could take it home, no charge. While most photos were unrecoverable they saved many, giving back the memories to surviving families.
ok fellas I'm about to get the K70 with the 18-135 WR zoom, then a prime once I figure out what focal length I like.
Finally I can stop reading tech sheets and gearfagging and start taking some goddamn photos
K10D is a pretty nice oldtimer if you don't mind the weight, low resolution (by modern standards) and noise. I sure don't
Some K10D pictures:

Tough question. K-70 is more modern sensor and electronics but K-3 Mk1 is a pro body with pro features, faster shutter, better faster AF, faster burst rate, dual sd cards, all metal body.
I would go for the K-3, possibly a KP if you can get one at a good price
/pentax/ bros I really like the in-camera raw development on my k10d. Would you have use for a similar application for doing quick & simple DNG raw development on desktop? Just like the original thing it would have few options and as simple as possible. Just some (-3..+3) sliders for contrast, saturation, sharpness and ISO.
Those are probably nice software, but still not as simple as the one embedded in the camera
Curious to see how this prototype turns out. Now I need to learn the steps to use LibRaw for decoding DNG files, how to display a preview image, etc...
It literally uses the settings in the camera. All the possible settings are on the screen with the ones you want. There are no separate modules or other settings, quite simple.
imho yes of course, but also lots of other cameras make a good first camera, including compacts. make sure you get the right camera for you, it takes time sometimes
It's the hipster homosexual choice recently, seems like some influencers have made widespread the knowledge that Pentax bodies are premium Ricoh GR's with interchangeable lens mount.
Sorry, meant to say:
In recent weeks the Pentax KP has been promoted in-masse, as in an almost planned way, by the implicitly-homosexual urban sub-group who lean towards the liberal forms of photography as the complete, high quality interchangeable lens form factor of their preferred tool to capture images, the Ricoh GRII/III
It's just the common interest moving onward, up until now anyone who wanted an entry into the Pentax line would go for a K-70, that did not change. People who wanted a higher end body would go for a K-3 or K-3 II even after the K-1, K-1 II and K-3 III the used market went for the K-3 1 and 2. Now the common interest has shifted and the KP became the main interest for its nicer design. Bonus points for being able to turn it into a classic looking camera by switching the grip while the innards are of the K-3II and K-70 (accelerator chip).
It is nothing strange really, just the common interest shifting with people leaving while new people flocking to the old style class of DSLRs in the sea of mirrorless. Plus it looks cool.
Now the rampant snoy shilling that's been going on the board for years, actually more than half a decade, now that is active shilling, and your tone reminds me of one of those shills.
I wonder how Ricoh SLRs are? Never used one. Saw this SLR at flea market earlier this year. The thing was in mint condition. There wasn't even any dust

I say go for it, especially since they're usually under $200 these days. I used one as a main travel camera for a few years and still pull it out occasionally.
01 8.5mm and 06 15-45mm are the best lenses IMO, although considering they only released 8 lenses it's pretty cheap to get a full set minus the weirdly rare wide zoom.
Ted's online orders don't update regularly. They often say "processing" still even after the item's been delivered. It very well could have already shipped but you don't know it yet
>muh 20bit vlog ungraded codecs >when there have been excellent feature films shot on less powerful hardware
Also pentax is for photographers, not filming your retarded tiktoks zoom zoom
They won't have my order until mid-late August apparently. What should I do? Wait and cope without a camera, or refund and get something actually in stock even if it's not what I want?
Anon always get what you want. In 4 years from now you'll have used that camera for a hair less than 4 years and would have had the one you wanted the entire time.
I deal with this every time I buy something and it's always worth it in the end.
My lens wasn't wide enough (SMC Pentax-F35-80 4-5.6) to fit all of the building in one picture. I stitched three raw frames together with Hugin Panorama Creator

I can't really speak to the newer lenses, but after a decade of using my gear at least weekly I like these:
Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC HSM
Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM
the wide lives on my K5, the long on my K3
I use the long most, and toss the short in a 5L sling bag if i'm taking both,
HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR
Probably a testament to the new optical coatings: takes nice daylight images with tasty saturation and contrast, and is light; which is good for carrying, but not good for stabilizing in your hand at 300mm. Its also a dust pump design - which i never like. Plus the WR makes the zoom ring stiff AND it's focus seems to always seek in the wrong direction and need to come back. Maybe the HSM one is better than the screwdrive.
I havent used mine for aeons, but I'd probably pull it out to look at as an alternative to my daily long if i wanted a travel lens for strong daylight only.
maybe APSC is better for telephoto than foolfrum
maybe i shoot enough that filling my 6th 4TB drive (and it's backup duplicate) with photos at 150% of my current rate isnt a positive
maybe 4fps isnt going to work with how i currently shoot
maybe i dont want to have to spend somewhere near AU$3k on a camera, grip and batteries when the 3 cameras I already own are still functional
...
maybe im just not a brainwashed gearfag with a constant need to "UpGrAdE"
>talent
lol, photographers who think they have talent are just competitively fluffing themselves. At best we learn to recognise and aesthetic and either create a controlled shooting environment, or learn how to function in various dynamic ones.
...and persist.
Today I had a trip to a small island by a cruise ship. I brought my K10D & F35-80 with me and took these 36 pics along the way. Great fun, I only wish there were some clouds for better landscape shots.

Exactly. I attended a mushroom foraging trip arranged by a local mushroom association. There were some retired professors who helped identifying the different mushroom species. The objective was to learn
So I recently had el famoso aperture block failure on my KS2 and had to get a K200D as a replacement while I fix the issue. Thing is, the resolution of the K200d is supposed to be much lower but I don’t really see any difference.
Can you tell which photo was taken by the KS2 and which was taken by the K200D ?

I am happy for you Anon, felt the same way when I got my K-1. Make sure to take your time and set your settings right otherwise it can kick you in the ass. The crop settings visible in OVF is also a nice touch.
To get nice lens on the cheap, both the plastic fantastics DA 50 and DA 35 are fully FF compatible, but the FA 43 is just lovely
Both are nice, but if you don't mind the weight and you'd like to have two control wheels, then K10D might be a better choice. K10D also uses the standard Pentax D-LI50 lithium battery instead of AA batteries. I've never used the K200d myself
AAs are a good thing. Various proprietary form factors of Li-ion go out of production and become hard to find, and Li-ion has a shelf life, too, whether it's used or not. NiMH AAs and chargers to suit them, on the other hand, will be easily available everywhere until humanity starts a third world war and incinerates the whole planet.
Anon I've been carrying the Pentax torch on this board for h'years. Anons don't always want to hear it through.

You mean the DA* 16-50? Or the FA-43 on the K-1?
the 16-50
It's a nice lens but will bite you in the ass if you don't treat it exactly right, will cover your shots in fringing and purple vomit if you don't set your aperture and focus right.
It was always the chad system. I remember back in the early 2010s when bentax k50 was the meme Wyato recommendation

Nice. Agree, at 1+ seconds even mundane scenes may become magical. Currently I'm limited to doing long exp in the night or evening as I don't have any ND filter. Not sure which one I should buy, ND8, ND16, ND1000, etc...

Cool shot anon, how do you get this effect?
It's just slow shutter speed. Dim evening light allowed 1½ sec shutter speed at f/16 without overexposure. I used a tripod and camera 2-second self-timer to take the picture (I don't have cable release atm)
I've almost decided on what Pentax to get, between the KS2, K3-3 or K70
Is there really much difference between specs and size?
Check the ISO range and noise quality. Pentax cameras have a wide range of low light performance, with some of the k-series being vastly better with noise quality in high ISO modes. Other than that in my experience the UI and autofocus modes etc knick knacks are the big difference.
And to add weather sealing and impact resistance is HEAVY on pentax.

Recs for a lens that'd be good for street and night?
the 50mm ƒ1.8 is just about the best deal out there for lenses. also they have a similar cheep 35mm
Can't be that great, if you don't take pictures with it.
Just got a bigass sigma 50-500mm lens for my K-1. Heavy as FUCK. It's the version without optical stabilization, but I figure that's what the IBIS is for. I like it so far, but it's not very discreet for street photography. Great for birds, girls, and helicopters.
>Superb lens
>Widely regarded as the worst 50/1.4 in existence
Goddamn what's with Pentax shooters, same shit happens all the time
We regard image quality differently to the "Snoy method".

Also still can't find the ramen Pentax so here's some crystal art one
>F mount is longer flange distance so it just needs a mechanical bayonet adapter
Cannot focus to infinity last i read, the F to EF does not have the glass IIRC
F is a longer flange than K, but only by about a millimeter or so. You can't make an adapter thin enough to be glassless, is the problem.
I don't mind the glass design, i mind that it uses cheap shitty glass.
Guess there's not enough market for it.
>print your photos
Not even once
>and when shooting portraits and wide open you don't want deep pores and you only want the center to be sharp.

70 hands down
Even better if you can find a used K-3
still stuck in my KS2 vs K70 quandary
KS2 is half the price, but seems to be worse in low light
k70 owner. It is a great camera and pairs well with the plastic fantastic nifty fity lens. 18-135 good all purpose lens also. If you have the money consider the 16-50mm f 2.8 lens as an everyday walkaround (costs as much or more than the camera). I'll try to find some low light pics and post some time so you can see. Can't speak for the k2 though
You're really only buying a camera every 5+ years anon. Just get the better one to start with. Everything goes obsolete eventually but you want to enjoy it as much as possible, if you're gonna pull the trigger at all
my 2¢
this
except the 16-50/2.8 as walkaround. It is not a walkaround or event lens, it is mainly for portraits and landscape faffing. For everyday walkaround the 16-45/4 is better or the 20-40 Limited zoom. Out of these three the 16-45 is the sharpest (later model is the 16-85 WR, highly recommended)
where are you located anon? if you're in Aus I'm happy to send you my beloved K50 for $0 (GST incl) with LIMITED TIME FREE SHIPPING

this camera was my best friend for 4 years. it had the aperture failure but I took it apart and fixed it and it never failed again for 2 years until I bought my KP. no other malfunctions or signs of damage/wear, except the odd dead pickle visible in long night exposures, but it has a dead pickle self-detection feature so it's not a problem.

Don't do it anon, K-50 has aperture block problems and you can't get it serviced anymore
>it had the aperture failure but I took it apart and fixed it and it never failed again
Where do you even buy a new Pentax in Australia? I have never seen them in a shop.

Want to know how I know you're one of those homosexuals that spends 3x the amount of time looking at youtubers product reviews than you do taking photos?
Ted's Cameras or Camera House. CH has tonnes of Pentax stuff, they even still stock Q lenses.
I got my KayPee and quite a few lenses through Ted's. Often they are "special order" but I still got them in a week or two, even mid-covid I got my 100mm prime in like 2 weeks when they thought it might take 12.
Not that anon, but how do you find the KP?
As a bonus, the right hand grip is interchangeable with 3 sizes available (depending what country you are it usually comes with all 3) and that was neat too.

yeah, like 80% of this thread. Pentax's whole recent history is a joke.

Don't care, still jap garbage.
>35-70mm
why even bother with a zoom? Just get a 50.
>why even bother with a zoom?
Because he has 3 different focal uses there, dummy
I find it to be extremely versatile with the ability to frame photos how I want.
My planned setup for landscapes and astro is K70 with the 50mm f1.8, would that have any issues ?
Yes
It will likely explode, pee on your cat and also slap your grandma
For starting out I'd rather go with the kit lens, 18-50 WR. Later I'd get the DA 21 Limited and the DA 40 Limited.
The 50/1.8 is a very good and cheap lens but on APS-C it will give you problems. It is more of a portrait lens and you would need FF to start getting good compositions with it and even then I find it constricting and went with the wider 43mm
>the product is indistinguishable from camera phones
>Shooting landscape with the front camera of a cellphone
Does your room feature padded walls?
>Shooting landscapes with wide-angle is a meme
Anon is starting out, it is easier to shoot wide angle. Don't be a dick.
We would need to see what kind of landscape the inquirer pretends to shoot.
what you say is true but I don't think you're reflecting well on how beginners get started
not the anon you're responding to btw
How much of a difference is there between the K1, K1-II and K3 models?
The difference in cost here is huge but are there more features?
Well shit, I just want a weather sealed solid camera that'll be great for night shooting that isn't too expensive and Pentax seemed my best bet
PENTAX weather sealing...

this is truly one of the magical moments in life. an then there's the waiting, and then there's the having!
Wait is it shit? Reviews and sample images make it seem great
I can't comment about the speed because I don't have one but it's a bit of a tank. 1kg according to dpreview.com (batteries but no lens). Not out of the ordinary for the type of camera it is but in the grand scheme of things quite heavy. If you're used to a 5D3 or something like that you won't notice a difference. If lanky ass Lok Cheung can walk around with one all day you'll be right
I want to do both, the main use is at night time for whatever strikes my fancy to take photos of.
Then what should I get instead buster? Luckily I made that post before I actually slammed the order button
>takes out of focus blurry shots of femoids
Anon you're just fucking horrendous at photography
I want to take photos at night, the thing with the Z5 is the lenses aren't weather sealed. Pentax bodies and lenses being durable is a big selling point, because when some weather shit happens I want to be able to take photos of it
>b-but you shouldn't be outside when its raining/snowing/abo attack
That's how you get interesting photos

>Have you ever used an OVF at night?
Have you ever photographed?
A stable stand, absence of image stabilization and in camera noise reduction respective lag, endurance during shooting in terms of soaking, cooling or heating, energy draining, the ability of external power supply are all much more important.
anon just proofread your post before posting it
Next time. I didn't bump though, which you did.

Which pentax k would you recommend? I'm on a budget. I don't think I'd wanna spend more than 300
None in particular, but one with a number in the name.
A 16Mpx minimum with a base lens (18-55) is around 150€ if you search on craigslist or else.
From then buy better lenses. A manual 28 2.8 is under 50€

Pentax SV vs Nikon FG?
Haven't used any Nikon cameras, but I'd say those you mentioned are totally different class of equipment. The FG has many electronic functions and several exposure modes. The SV is a very bare bones model without any bells & whistles. It doesn't even have a built-in light meter. I think its only "feature" is self-timer around the film rewind crank. It's a lovely camera though, my father had one and I still have it.
Thanks
If you end up getting an SV, be prepared to do some maintenance/CLA to it. Quote from Pentax forums user review:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/camerareviews/pentax-sv-h3v.html
>As a 'daily use' camera, the SV is a brilliant choice and there should be no reliability concerns. Provided the camera is used. An old eBay purchase, which hasn't been used for thirty years, is not working for that reason NOT because the camera is inherently unreliable. Store your serviced camera in a sealed box with a big silica gel bag and 'exercise it once a month, and it will last a lifetime.

>DA 16-85 WR
Seems like a nice lens, quite sharp for a zoom
And the WR is no joke either
The crop factor autism is doing my head in lads
You guys say to get the 18-135, but wouldn't it be a 36-270 in actual use?
something like that yes
https://www.omnicalculator.com/other/crop-factor
ok fellas I'm about to get the K70 with the 18-135 WR zoom, then a prime once I figure out what focal length I like.
Finally I can stop reading tech sheets and gearfagging and start taking some goddamn photos
this wharms my heart. i look forward to seeing photos in a future Bentax thread
K10D is a pretty nice oldtimer if you don't mind the weight, low resolution (by modern standards) and noise. I sure don't

K70 vs K3-i?
I have no sperience with the K3 but, K70
Quick sketch of possible desktop UI
You have all that in Silkypix/Digital Camera Utility
Those are probably nice software, but still not as simple as the one embedded in the camera
Curious to see how this prototype turns out. Now I need to learn the steps to use LibRaw for decoding DNG files, how to display a preview image, etc...
It literally uses the settings in the camera. All the possible settings are on the screen with the ones you want. There are no separate modules or other settings, quite simple.
Looks like everyone is getting a KP. Would it be a good first real camera?
imho yes of course, but also lots of other cameras make a good first camera, including compacts. make sure you get the right camera for you, it takes time sometimes
It's the hipster homosexual choice recently, seems like some influencers have made widespread the knowledge that Pentax bodies are premium Ricoh GR's with interchangeable lens mount.
not sure I like your tone anon
Sorry, meant to say:
In recent weeks the Pentax KP has been promoted in-masse, as in an almost planned way, by the implicitly-homosexual urban sub-group who lean towards the liberal forms of photography as the complete, high quality interchangeable lens form factor of their preferred tool to capture images, the Ricoh GRII/III
Much better
Is this true? I have a silver KP could I get like K1 money for it??
>could I get like K1 money for it??
KP can be sold for a thousand nowadays, that's certainly K1 money
Learn to read bro
anon what the fuck are you talking about
It's just the common interest moving onward, up until now anyone who wanted an entry into the Pentax line would go for a K-70, that did not change.
I had the K-3 as my first DSLR, the KP is essentially a more modern version of the K-3. I think you can’t go wrong with it.
fuck ricoh, worst company I have to deal with, terrible customer service and the worst support and quality assurance. I work for Ricoh btw.
yuh huh

Is one of the Pentax Q series still worth buying to fuck around with? And by fuck around i mean still get some decent results?
It is the same results when it was new, so yes. It even has some proper good lens
Which one?
The 70-200 equivalent
I'm buying it. It seems overpriced as hell from Japan and with import tax, but fuck it.

Also I heard good things about the K-3 III, mostly AF improvements but the sensor is dope as well
The K-5 was awesome but they perfected it with the release of the K-5 IIs.

Are you planning to go K-1 with that 70-200/2.8?
It made a world of difference with my Tammy 70-200 when I got a K-1 after the K-3
less zoom, heavier bulkier camera, bigger files.....for how many thousand dollars?
nope
>less zoom
Just get closer, senpai
>too heavy
go to the gym, zoomie
>bigger files
Nobody cares, any shitbox will process them at the same speed
Maybe you're just lacking talent
maybe APSC is better for telephoto than foolfrum
maybe i shoot enough that filling my 6th 4TB drive (and it's backup duplicate) with photos at 150% of my current rate isnt a positive
maybe 4fps isnt going to work with how i currently shoot
maybe i dont want to have to spend somewhere near AU$3k on a camera, grip and batteries when the 3 cameras I already own are still functional
...
maybe im just not a brainwashed gearfag with a constant need to "UpGrAdE"
>talent
lol, photographers who think they have talent are just competitively fluffing themselves. At best we learn to recognise and aesthetic and either create a controlled shooting environment, or learn how to function in various dynamic ones.
...and persist.

Should I get a K10D or K200D?
Both are nice, but if you don't mind the weight and you'd like to have two control wheels, then K10D might be a better choice. K10D also uses the standard Pentax D-LI50 lithium battery instead of AA batteries. I've never used the K200d myself
AAs are a good thing. Various proprietary form factors of Li-ion go out of production and become hard to find, and Li-ion has a shelf life, too, whether it's used or not. NiMH AAs and chargers to suit them, on the other hand, will be easily available everywhere until humanity starts a third world war and incinerates the whole planet.
