And why?
I honestly dig Takei's variety when it comes to fashion and his unique shape design philosophy makes for great silhouettes and memorable characters in general

Very unpopular opinion but I don't give a fuck.
I really like Obata's redesigns for Castlevania Judgement and I think he should have been hired to do more for future games. He perfectly complements Kojima's artstyle.
I just dig the retarded pseudo-gothic/medieval animu artstyle that got really popular in the mid-00's. It's nostalgic to me.
fpbp
tired of retards shitting on these designs
Only good one was Shanoa
I want to impregnate Marion Phauna
you want to impregnate a drawing? how retarded are you?
Gmi. That's how you should be thinking. Best of luck
Thanks anon, now bend over cuz you're next.
Are you just gonna make these threads forever, Gabe?
Absolutely
I like Fujisaki Ryu's designs a whole lot
I was going to make us up for Threads, but I guess since there is a Job in his character design thread, so I’m just going to contribute to this instead
Did Japanese artist even give a shit about character, silhouette or do they just do whatever seems cool. Why does it feel like American and western artist obsessed so much over character shape but it feels like it’s a non-existent concept of Japanese character design. It seems like Japanese artist care more about the internal look of the character as opposed to the rehability and shapes.
Bonus if anyone can recommend character design books made by Japanese artists
Because as is proven again and again shape doesn't matter if people like the character. Lots of Western design 'rules' don't apply to the real world.
The reason western animation is failing so hard is because they stick religiously to stupid rules like this
silhouette is another thing thats poorly explained by westoids but still a different way to look at your characters
just like how they do with color theory and shape design
they simplify these concepts with
Red means angry! >:(
and round means friendly
Zero nuance, and not very helpful for people who want to design more than Steven Universe characters.
if you look carefully at cloud's design you can tell there are places of interest, and places of rest (where its less busy)
places where lines are straight, and lines are curved. there's a bit of a pattern you can notice
this kind of visual contrast helps with design. bad designs usually lack that kind of harmony.
Putting rules in art makes art shit. The very best art breaks the rules and ignores them
Sure thing Basquiat
you can't break rules you don't actually understand. art is so much more than DA RULES or lol just do whatever you want
its sophisticated
Shit take
You need to know what works snd what doesn’t work. If you tried colouring something your logic falls apart so fast
So do you know any japanese character design books? Or even just japanese design books?

someone needs to get this book and scan it
A lot of "design rules" are just marketing stuff with pretty words
oda
Agree
I honestly can't think of another manga author who has a more sleek/stylish look to their characters than Kubo. He's got the variety, the drip, the sauce,
not my absolute favorite but he rarely gets any attention
Tsubasa Fukuchi who made Law of Ueki has a deceptively simple style thats extremely expressive with very recognizable characters
Mangaka no, but Akihiko Yoshida. especially FF tactics.
I love Suzuhito Yasuda but still have no idea what he was smoking when he drew Hoe-boive's Kaela. It's not like his new work after that have noodle proportions either.
I like how witch hat atelier gives us unique designs for a genre that had been done to death
I guess keeping with the character design thread, how does one base their designs off of a pre-existing culture yet make it obviously their own design? Like how ATLA has clear links but it's not too distracting.
You translate the original design to your own purpose and form. Essentially, you take the distinct elements of it and repurpose.
How insightful. Nobody ever before has noticed marketing is literally a graphic design sales pitch.
You should join your local MENSA chapter.
you ok?
shaman king is the original reason I fap exclusively to 2d now
