Why is it so rare to find commercial artists using oil painting for their work? I want to find someone to learn from but most of them are retired old farts with little knowledge on how to teach young people

A good portion of people making art for MtG use oil paints. For example.

oil is expensive and takes forever to dry. most will only do acrylic base with oil finish if at all.

Oil is too slow for commercial art. You wanna learn oil, follow oil painters

Mostly the drying issues, which in the fine art side of the house is a desirable trait.

Didn't there used to be illustrators who did use oils in commercial works in the past? There were American illustrators in the 19th and 20th century did oil paintings and then reproduced them for prints, newspapers, books, magazines and were quite prolific. Is it because now people are expected to work faster or something

even if it dried within seconds, it's still slower than digital where you have tools like pasting, instant color adjustments, not having to physically mix paint to dip brush and move the brush to the canvas, not needing to prepare canvases, no time cleaning brushes, proportion correction in case you change your design, lasso tool, and so much more. then you also have to think about professionally photoraphing the works in good lighting.

like everyone said it takes ages to dry and even then it's not actually "dry" and you occasionally have to treat it.

I think it will not be long until most commercial artists go by the wayside as ai generated images become a realistic and cheaper alternative to paying a human.

AI cant paint you retard. You could get some digital piece of shit you can make a print of, but you arent getting brush strokes, the dimensionality of layers of paint and the framed canvas image.

just going to say this, there are already services that print with paint for the dimensionality, its been something that was being worked on for a VERY long time because the drawn/painted aspect of art is VERY desirable.
